the stars that guide us
The Sewol Ferry Tragedy.
For this project, I chose to design a book cover inspired by the Sewol Ferry tragedy, a heartbreaking event that occurred on April 16, 2014. I wanted a theme I could connect with deeply, and as a longtime K‑pop fan, especially of BTS, I was drawn to the emotional storytelling surrounding their 2017 song Spring Day. Many fans and critics have interpreted the song and its imagery as a reflection on the Sewol tragedy, and that connection guided the direction of my design.
I approached the cover with a child‑like, hand‑drawn aesthetic, echoing the innocence of the students who boarded the ferry that morning. The yellow paper boat symbolizes the Sewol ferry itself, while the color yellow also represents the ribbons worn by victims’ families and survivors in remembrance. The red trail behind the boat serves as a stark reminder of the lives lost — a visual metaphor for grief and the irreversible impact of the tragedy.
In the “water,” I included everyday school items, referencing the personal belongings divers recovered when many bodies could not be. These objects act as quiet memorials, representing the students’ interrupted lives and the memories left behind.
The constellation Cetus, the whale, appears in the sky as an additional layer of symbolism. It connects to BTS’s song Whalien 52, a story of isolation and unheard voices — themes that resonate deeply with the tragedy. Cetus also ties into nautical navigation, reinforcing the title I chose: “The Stars That Guide Us.” In this context, the stars become a bittersweet reminder of guidance gone wrong; the victims were instructed to stay in place, a decision that ultimately cost many their lives.
This design is my attempt to honor the story, the symbolism, and the emotional weight carried by those affected — blending visual metaphor, cultural connection, and respectful remembrance.
